Academic experts jointly explored new pathways for the future of economics in China

On November 22, 2025, Prof. Angus C. Chu, APAEM Macao Economy Team Leader at the University of Macau (UM), was invited to the “China Economic Theory Innovation and Independent Knowledge System Construction—Forum of University Presidents and Deans,” organized by the School of Economics at Fudan University. There, he served as a panelist in a sub-forum session. Prof. Chu exchanged insights with academic experts from various universities on the theme of “Cultivating Economics Talent in the AI Era.”

The sub-forum was moderated by Prof. Xian Xu, Vice Dean of the School of Economics at Fudan University. Alongside Prof. Chu, the sub-forum gathered experts and scholars from renowned institutions, such as Sichuan University, Zhejiang University, Xiamen University, Jinan University, and Sun Yat-sen University. Participants shared their universities’ practical experiences and forward-looking perspectives on key topics, including how to innovate curriculum systems to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies and how to cultivate interdisciplinary talents with robust theoretical foundations and data science capabilities.

The “China Economic Theory Innovation and Independent Knowledge System Construction—Forum of University Presidents and Deans” was convened in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the restoration of the School of Economics at Fudan University. The event brought together over 50 presidents of partner universities, deans of economics schools, academic experts, and representatives from authoritative journals. Attendees engaged in in-depth discussions on critical issues such as building China’s independent economic knowledge system, talent development in the AI era, and the role of economics in serving national strategies, jointly exploring new pathways for the future of economics in China.

The forum featured keynote speeches and parallel sub-forum sessions. Three sub-forums were conducted simultaneously, each centered on distinct themes. Numerous academic experts participated in lively and profound exchanges on specific topics, fostering a convergence of perspectives and a dynamic clash of ideas across disciplines.
