Prof. Kwan commented on the 2025 Policy Address in Macao Forum
Recently, Prof. Fung Kwan, Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Macau’s Faculty of Social Sciences and a scholar at the Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management, was interviewed by TDM (Teledifusão de Macau) regarding the revised Macao Economic Forecast for 2025 (referred as the Forecast), jointly published by the University of Macau’s Centre for Macau Studies and Department of Economics.
The Forecast has adjusted Macao’s projected GDP growth rate downward from over 7% to 6.8%. Prof. Kwan noted that the revision reflects the impact of global economic variables, particularly the potential contraction in global trade due to US tariff policies, which could further affect tourist spending in Macao. Other economic indicators have also been adjusted, including a 6.8% growth in service exports, a 3.8% rise in private consumption expenditure, and an inflation rate of 0.7%.
Additionally, in an appearance on TDM’s radio programme Macao Forum, Prof. Kwan commented on the Macao government’s recently released 2025 Policy Address. He described the document as overall balanced, with expected social welfare measures such as increases in pension payouts and newly launched childcare subsidies aligning with public expectations.
