The University of Macau’s (UM) 5th module of the Global Leadership Development Programme (GLDP) took place in Kyushu and Nagasaki, Japan, from 21st to 23rd July. It was jointly organised by the UM’s Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management (APAEM) and Faculty of Business Administration (FBA), together with Kyushu Economic Forum and Kyushu Association of Independent Entrepreneurs (AIE Kyushu) as the co-organisers. The module was attended by more than 60 participants from China, Macao and Japan. These participants came from various industries such as hospitality, construction & architecture, banking & finance, media & publishing, local government bodies and academic community.

The opening ceremony took place at the Nagasaki International University on the 21st July and was hosted by Professor Shigemi Furuta, Programme Director of APAEM. Honorable guests  included Dr. Jonathan Choi, Chairman of the Hong Kong-based Sunwah Group and Councilor of UM, Professor Jacky So, Dean of Faculty of Business Administration of UM and Director of APAEM, Mr. Houdou Nakamura, Governor of Nagasaki Prefecture Government, Mr. Norio Tomonaga, Mayor of City of Sasebo, Mr. Susumu Ishihahra, Chairman of Kyushu Tourism Promotion Council, Mr. Akinori Kobayakawa, Chairman of AIE Kyushu, and Mr. Naoki Abe, Chancellor of the Nagasaki International University.

With the aim of nurturing internationally-competitive and socially-responsible leaders in the Asia-Pacific region, the APAEM focused on the current development of integrated resorts in Japan and shared Macao’s experiences and insights on integrated resorts in this module. The core theme of this 5th module was ‘Strategy, Growth and Responsible Gaming in Kyushu Integrated Resort’. The three-day module comprised 7 seminars and included theoretical knowledge presented by scholars from Macao and Japan, speakers from industry leaders, group presentation and cultural exchange activities like chado. Dean Jacky So, Professor Glenn McCartney and Professor Desmond Lam from UM conducted integrated resort-related seminars, which focused on ‘Revenue Management’, ‘Convention and Hospitality, Event Entertainment Management and Branding’, ‘Strategic Management’, ‘Responsible Gaming’, etc. The participants were also invited to a site visit at one of potential contenders in building an integrated resort in Japan – Huis Ten Bosch.
